QScale: Setting a New Benchmark for Green Data Centers

QScale is redefining sustainable data center infrastructure in North America, with a strong focus on high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI), and supercomputing-all powered by innovative green initiatives and a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Powered by 100% Renewable Energy

QScale’s flagship Q01 campus in Lévis, Quebec, is powered entirely by hydroelectric energy, leveraging Quebec’s 99% renewable grid to deliver a carbon-neutral platform for even the most demanding computing workloads. Clients benefit from low and predictable electricity rates, eliminating the need to purchase carbon credits, and dramatically reducing their operational carbon footprint.

Advanced Cooling and Waste Heat Recovery

QScale’s data centers are purpose-built for energy efficiency, featuring direct-to-chip liquid cooling and advanced thermal management. These systems enable ultra-high-density deployments-up to 100kW per rack-while achieving a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.27. Up to 80% of the year, the facility uses free cooling thanks to Quebec’s cold climate.

A standout feature is QScale’s waste heat recovery system. Heat generated by servers is captured and transferred to nearby greenhouses, supporting local agriculture and turning a traditional data center byproduct into a valuable community resource. The project is expected to enable the production of up to 82,200 tonnes of tomatoes annually, helping fill Quebecers’ pantries and advancing the province’s sustainability and agricultural goals.

Recognition and Innovation

  • QScale’s Q01 campus is the first colocation facility in Canada to achieve OCP Ready™ recognition, underscoring its commitment to open, energy-efficient infrastructure.

  • The Q01 facility was named “North American Data Center Project of the Year” at the 2023 DatacenterDynamics (DCD) Global Awards, reflecting its industry leadership in sustainability and innovation.

  • The campus is designed for rapid expansion, with up to 142MW of capacity and modular, customizable spaces for diverse client needs.

Community and Environmental Impact

QScale’s approach is integrative and forward-looking: the company’s infrastructure investments are supported by both private and government stakeholders, reflecting broad confidence in its vision. By combining renewable energy, heat recovery, and next-generation cooling, QScale claims its Lévis campus could take the equivalent of 31,000 cars off the road in annual emissions reductions.

Summary

QScale is a model of environmentally kind data center development, blending 100% renewable energy, advanced cooling, and innovative waste heat recovery to set new standards for sustainability in digital infrastructure. Its award-winning Q01 campus demonstrates how the data center industry can drive both technological progress and positive environmental and community outcomes.
